NJ PTC FAQ

1. What handgun should I use for the course?
Whatever handgun or revolver you're familiar with, can safely operate, and shoot effectively to pass the CCARE qualification. Once you receive your permit, any handgun may be carried.

2. Do I need to shoot from concealment during the course and for the qualification?
Yes, I require students to shoot from concealment during training portion (dry/live fire), and during qualifications. OWB holsters and vests are acceptable.

3. Do I need a NJ FID card to apply for my carry permit or take the course?
Non-NJ residents are NOT required to produce or have a NJ FID for the application process or course.

4. What handgun qualification do you use?
I use the CCARE qualification course of fire established and approved by the NJ Attorney General’s Office. The course requires fifty (50) rounds total, and is shoot from five (5) different distances. The course of fire starts at the three (3) yard line and ends at the fifteen (15) yard line.

5. Is this course for beginners?
Unfortunately, this course is not designed for beginner or entry level handgun shooters with limited or minimal experience. Although I do cover basic handgun fundamentals and do my best to address deficiencies I observe during live fire drills, the qualification requires the student to achieve a minimum of 80% (40 out of 50) to pass.

Fundamental based handgun training is available for new shooters. Contact me for further details.

6. Can I carry my firearm in different states if I’m licensed to carry in NJ?
Yes, NJ does share reciprocity with different states, BUT not our neighboring states (DE, PA, NY). If you want to carry your weapon in a different state, you’ll need to apply to those states individually.

7. Has the NJ Permit to Carry (PTC) application process changed?
Yes, the process was updated in 2023 by the NJ Attorney General's Office. Start your PTC application by accessing the New Jersey State Police website @ WWW.NJSP.ORG
